Indonesia seems to still be a long extended use of nuclear energy as an alternative to fossil fuels. The reason, other alternative energy is irreplaceable still available in abundance in ground water.
This was conveyed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in a press conference after the ASEAN summit in Jakarta, Sunday, May 8, 2011. He said that nuclear energy is an energy that must be carefully prepared and planned if there will be an option.
"Of course, all parties must fully understand the plus and minus the use of nuclear energy, so when it became the choice of all must be ready," said SBY.
Yudhoyono said that some countries are making nuclear energy as an alternative energy that serve as long-term solution. Indonesia itself, he added, would not use nuclear energy and try some other alternative energy.
"We still prefer other energy sources, including alternatives such as solar power, water and geothermal," said SBY.
For alternative energy bioenergy, Yudhoyono said Indonesia was still considering it carefully. He said that the abundant use of bioenergy will be able to have a negative impact on food security.
With so many to choose from alternative energy, nuclear energy remains a last option, even may not yet be elected. "We must reduce fossil fuel addiction, but do not have to necessarily use nuclear," he said.
Nuclear safety issues also surfaced in the discussion at the 18th ASEAN summit today. ASEAN leaders agreed to enhance global nuclear security framework. In this regard, ASEAN will cooperate with the UN nuclear agency, IAEA, and Nuclear Safety Network ASEAN (ANSN).
In the chairman statement, the heads of ASEAN countries also expressed their solidarity and condolences over nuclear incident in Fukushima, Japan, after earthquake and tsunami last March.
"We express sympathy and solidarity with Fukushima Japan-related incidents and notes that there is potential for trans-border effects," wrote the chairman of the ASEAN summit statement.
